Scope of the catalog

How APK2Down organizes 1.4M+ Android packages into 92 categories.

APK2Down splits every indexed package along two orthogonal axes. Function describes what the app does — a launcher, a password manager, an offline map. Genre describes the editorial surface — Action, Casual, Simulation, RPG. Apps and games live in the same technical catalog but render under different browse trees so a sideloader looking for a tool never has to scroll past a deck-builder.

Categories are hand-curated, not algorithmically inferred. Our 14-person team assigns each new APK to exactly one primary bucket and up to two secondary tags, and the same package will appear under the same bucket today, tomorrow, and a year from now. That stability is the whole point of an index page like this one.

How a category is added, merged, or retired from APK2Down.

A category is added only when (a) the Google Play Store taxonomy no longer cleanly describes a recurring cluster of 500+ apps and (b) at least two of our curators independently propose the same label. New buckets are seeded empty and reviewed at the next quarterly audit. Merges are issued when a long-tail category drops below 200 active APKs for two consecutive quarters and a clear superseding bucket exists — the deprecated slug 301-redirects to the surviving one. Retirements are reserved for categories that violate policy (warez packaging, fake-cert bundles); retirements never remove user-facing search history.
